Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom is eyeing a reunion with Andy Yiadom this summer, according to The Sheffield Star.

But he faces a challenge to convince the powers-that-be at the club to sanction this signing.

Yiadom has been a long-term target for Leeds as he is available on a free transfer this summer when his contract with Barnsley expires.

Heckingbottom worked with the attack-minded right-back at Oakwell and wants to bring him to Leeds to bolster his options in that department.

Gaetano Berardi has had his discipline problems this season and Luke Ayling has only just returned from a long-term injury so Heckingbottom is worried about his options on the right-hand side of defence.

Leeds are likely to face competition for the Ghana international, who believes he can secure a move to the Premier League.

He has previously attracted interest from the top flight and this could be reignited with his contract coming to an end.

The former Barnet man has played 66 times for the Tykes in his two years at the club but now looks set to move on following Barnsley's relegation to League One.

Leeds boss Heckingbottom wants him at Elland Road but the Leeds chiefs are yet to be convinced that he is the right man to solve the defensive problems.

The Verdict

Yiadom has had a poor season at Barnsley after showing so much promise in his first year at the club.

But he is likely to get a Championship move at the very least with Leeds an attractive prospect for him given its location and his familiarity with Heckingbottom.

Leeds could look to give Lewie Coyle a chance instead of signing a new right-back but if they are set on it, a free transfer is low risk here - depending on his wage demands - for a player who would surely be a back-up to Ayling.
