Paul Cook has wasted no time in bolstering his squad in preparation for the 2017/18 League One campaign, since his recent appointment as Wigan Athletic manager.

The Latics have already confirmed the signings of highly-rated Oxford United defender Chey Dunkley, and are also looking to secure the services of Manchester City full-back Ashley Smith-Brown on a loan deal.

But the best signing that the Lancashire club have made so far is undoubtedly Cook, and the former Portsmouth chief is definitely the man to take Wigan back up to the Championship following their relegation from the second tier last term.

The likes of Will Grigg and Omar Bogle will play an integral role in spearheading the Latics to promotion next year, however there is still much needed work to be done if Cook's men are to achieve their goals next season.

Cook has left new Pompey boss Kenny Jackett a very decent squad at his disposal, and there's no doubt that the South Coast club will be rivalling Wigan for a promotion place in 2017/18.

There is one player, however, who Cook should now definitely look to poach from Jackett's grasp at Fratton Park, and that man is Gary Roberts, who is valued at a price of £213k on Transfermarkt.

Roberts is no stranger to Cook, having played under the 50-year-old at Accrington, Chesterfield and of course, Pompey.

The versatile midfielder, who can operate as a winger or in behind the striker, would be a key asset for Wigan if Cook managed to land him, having scored 10 goals in 40 appearances for the Blues last term, assisting 7 times.

Roberts signed on at Fratton Park at the beginning of the 2015/16 campaign, and was one of Cook's first signings for Pompey, having been such an influential player in guiding Chesterfield to the League One play-off semi-finals in 2014/15.

Having netted 17 times in over 60 appearances for the Spireites in both League One and Two, as well as scoring the same for Pompey in just under 60 appearances, this reinforces how much of a key player Roberts would be for Athletic next season.

At the age of 33, Roberts is perhaps past his prime, but undeniably possesses vast experience in League One, and more importantly, knows how to get out of it, and should be the next player to walk into the DW Stadium under Cook's reign.

So...What do you think Wigan fans? Should Cook look to sign Gary Roberts? Would he be a good signing? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
