Paul Clement has revealed he took the advice of ‘friend and mentor’ Carlo Ancelotti before deciding whether to take the Derby County job, as reported by the Telegraph.

Clement has been Ancelotti’s right-hand man for the last six years, but ended his association with the 55 year old when Real Madrid relieved him of his services and Derby County came calling.

The former Chelsea coach put pen to paper on a £1.2 million a year deal at the iPro, and is tasked with spearheading a Derby side in search of Premier League football.

After working with Ancelotti at PSG, Real Madrid and Chelsea, Clement is ready to take the giant solo leap into management. Many are tipping him to be a successful replacement for Steve McClaren, who looks destined to join Newcastle.

Before leaving the Santiago Bernabeu, Clement admits he sought the advice of the Italian.

He said: “The way he managed me and the way I saw him manage the team and players was phenomenal. I spoke to him about this job, he gave me a lot of confidence and said: ‘you should try to be a head coach, you have to go soon’.”

We can also expect to see Carlo Ancelotti at the iPro stadium soon as well, as Clement explains.

“He said he’s going to come here and watch, I look forward to him seeing the team play. He is having a small bit of surgery on his neck but he’ll definitely be back.”
