Paul Caddis has claimed that his famous goal that saved Birmingham City from relegation from the Championship should not have stood.

Caddis scored a dramatic 93rd-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers on the final day of the 2013/14 season, as Birmingham came from two goals down in the final twelve minutes to save themselves from relegation.

Lee Clark's Birmingham side needed to better Doncaster Rovers' result to avoid relegation from League One, but found themselves needing two goals after Lukas Jutkiewicz put Bolton 2-0 up in the 76th minute.

Nikola Zigic gave Birmingham hope when he pulled a goal back with twelve minutes to go, before Caddis headed in from close range in injury time to save the Blues from relegation, sending the 3,500 away fans into delirium.

Caddis, who is currently without a club after leaving Bradford City, has now admitted in an interview with Open Goal that his goal against Bolton never should have stood because of a foul in the build up.

“We battered them but we were 2-0 down with 12 minutes to go," Caddis said.

"As soon as the second goal went in, we had unbelievable support - and they started singing and you think ‘There’s 12 minutes to go here’.

“We had word that Leicester had just gone 1-0 up against Donny.....big Ziggy scored with 12 minutes to go and we thought ‘We have a chance here’.

“My goal probably shouldn’t have stood because the boy cleared and big Specs, Jonathan Spector, has took the boy out on the edge of the box.

“The ref has played on, Jordan Ibe has went past somebody - one of the boys who was never on time, he’s had a shot, it’s deflected up in the air, Ziggy’s headed it, Ream’s cleared it off the line and I couldn’t really miss to be honest....

“I can still relive it and hear the fans. It was unbelievable."

The Verdict

Whether it should have stood or not, there's no doubt that Caddis made himself a Birmingham legend by scoring that goal. It was an unbelievable moment and is no doubt something that he'll remember for the rest of his life.

Birmingham showed incredible character and belief to come back from 2-0 with just over ten minutes to go that day.

It's probably one of the easiest goals he's ever had to score in his career, but I doubt he's scored a goal that was as important as that one was.
