Barnsley forward Patrick Schmidt has claimed his side has what it takes to turn around their sorry run of form, having lost heavily to Stoke at the weekend.

Barnsley currently sit rock-bottom of the Championship after 16 games, with only one win to their name this season, which came on the opening day of the season. This means the Tykes are currently on a torrid winless run stretching to 15 games after their 4-2 thumping at the hands of fellow strugglers Stoke City.

The game against the Potters presented a good chance for Barnsley to pick up some much-needed points and momentum against a relegation rival, but the away side put on a dominant display from the start of the game as they put four past the South Yorkshire side at Oakwell.

One player who did have a positive impact for the Tykes was forward Patrick Schmidt who came off the bench to score a late consolation goal to make it 4-2. Schmidt has had a difficult start to life at Oakwell this season, as he has been unable to make a consistent impact on the first-team.

A couple of minor injuries and an adjustment to the Championship has limited his influence at Barnsley, but he is confident of his team and his own performances picking up better results in the coming weeks. He had this to say to the club’s official site: “We all feel very disappointed because we worked really hard in training every day this week, but we didn’t get the rewards.

“Maybe we gave away the goals too easily. However, we need to pick ourselves up and turn it around by creating a positive feeling of scoring first and getting the three points at the end of the match.

“It was a very important game for us. It felt like a six-pointer as Stoke were at the bottom of the table and we were just above them, but now we have to work even harder to get that win we deserve.”

The Verdict

Barnsley will definitely be regretting the missed opportunity at the weekend against Stoke, as it presented a chance to pick up an all-important win against a team in the same situation as them.

They can take positives from the result that Schmidt has broke his Barnsley duck and therefore his confidence in the coming weeks will grow more and more, but it’s another defeat in a season that threatens to be over for Barnsley before long if they don’t start winning games.
