Leeds United moved to the top of the Championship after a convincing 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic yesterday, with Patrick Bamford scoring both goals.

The striker was criticised by the Whites fans as they missed out on promotion last season, with the ex-Middlesbrough man struggling at crucial moments during the run-in.

However, he told the club's official site that they will use the experience of the previous campaign to ensure they can go one better this time around.

"Last year for a lot of the boys it was the first time they have been up and around it all season in the league, so I think this year the boys have learnt a lot as a team from that.

"We’ve taken on everything that the manager said last year, learnt it last year and obviously we have to build on that this year, so I think that along with the experience will help us see through these kind of games."

Bamford knows he has pressure for his place after the signing of Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal on deadline day.

The Verdict

The striker will have known he is under pressure after the arrival of Nketiah but he proved his importance to the team with the crucial goals yesterday.

Whilst they were easy chances, he was in the right place and the right time and it will have done his confidence a lot of good.

As he says, the focus for Leeds is totally on promotion and it's about improving on last season and the fact they lost to ten-man Wigan a few months ago shows they've gone in the right direction.

Now, it's about continuing that and going on a run, starting with Wednesday's clash against Brentford - which Bamford is sure to start.
