Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has claimed that injury and illness forced him to make late changes to his side ahead of the defeat to Leeds United last weekend, which has drawn a mixed reaction from fans of the South West club.
The Robins were outclassed by Leeds on Saturday as Marcelo Bielsa’s side looked back to their best.
City only lost 1-0 but never really seemed to be in the game and were kept very quiet by the Whites all afternoon.
Johnson made a string of changes for the game, with Tomas Kalas, Han-Noah Massengo, and Andreas Weimann coming back into the side.
However, the City boss told the Bristol Post earlier this week that he was forced into those changes due to illness and injury.
Interesting discussion with Lee Johnson just now on team selection: says his team to face Leeds last Friday was quite different to the team that played on Sat – with Benkovic, Fam and Smith all originally in the side until injury and bugs hit. #BristolCity https://t.co/CBXo0HMR4r

Johnson revealed that Filip Benkovic, Korey Smith and Famara Diedhiou were originally in his plans for the trip to Elland Road, so it will be interesting to see if they return against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
City are seventh in the Championship and could climb back into the top six with a win against the Baggies.

Johnson’s claim has caused much debate amongst Robins supporters, with some fans suggesting he should be given some slack and others frustrated by his “excuses”.

It’s not the first time the team has been wierd though, this time he had reasons, what about reasons about all the other times

Great questions Gregor. Hopefully a lot of the people that like to knock him will listen to this.

….and that’s why us fans have to accept the line-ups we see 1 hour before kick-off, or at least wait until Lee gives his little team selection interview before the game.

“(Bentley); Hunt, Wiliams, Benkovic, Dasilva; Eliasson, Smith, Henrisken, Paterson; Diedhiou, Wells – that was Leeds XI on Friday.”
Illness obviously a big factor behind last Saturday’s team, always stuff going on. Shows how little the Tombola fans know at times https://t.co/82zWhfRa5h

So he has a problem nearly every week then..I can understand illness but this seems to be a massive excuse to me.

There is no reason for the fans to know, but they should be told about illness and injury when the team is announced by the communications department, which continually fails to do what it says on the tin: communicate.

Yep! Exactly what I said last Saturday. Pathetic in the main to be honest. Thought it was a brilliant press conference actually
