Sunderland missed out on the chance to close the gap on Barnsley in the automatic promotion places as they were forced to settle for a point against promotion rivals, Portsmouth.

The game finished 1-1, and Jack Ross' side took the lead on the day through Tom Flanagan's header early into the first-half.

But Pompey responded shortly before half-time with Jamal Lowe equalising to see Kenny Jackett's side head into the break level.

It was a closely-fought battle between the two promotion-chasing sides on the day, and a draw was far from ideal as they would have hoped to come away with three valuable points.

It means that Sunderland are now six points adrift of Barnsley with a game in hand, and it looks extremely likely that they'll have to make do with the lottery of the play-offs.

It's safe to say that Sunderland fans weren't best pleased with this latest result.
