Plenty of Derby County supporters have reacted to a suggestion from a fan on Facebook that the club should try to sign Shane Long in the January transfer window.

Derby made an underwhelming start to the current season under Phillip Cocu and are currently 17th in Championship table, eight points outside the play-off places.

The Rams have won their last three matches though and the arrival of Wayne Rooney appears to have given the rest of the players a much-needed confidence boost.

There's still enough time for the team to get their season back on track, but many fans feel that Cocu will need to strengthen his squad in the transfer market this month if the team are to achieve a top-six finish.

Derby are thought to be interested in signing a new forward this month and one supporter in the Facebook group "DCFC - ITS IN OUR DNA" suggested that club should try to sign Southampton striker Long.

The 32-year-old scored five goals in 26 Premier League appearances for Southampton last season, but he is yet to find the back of the net in 15 appearances in all competitions this campaign.

Quiz: Can you name every Derby County player’s shirt number?

Plenty of Derby fans were quick to respond to the suggestion on Facebook and give their thoughts on whether Long would be a good signing for the Rams. Here is a look at some of the best comments.

Keith Wilkinson: "Works hard but doesn't score goals."

Christopher Smith: "In and out of all the teams he’s played for, wrong attitude and idle, not a team player, don’t waste your money."

Mike Brierley: "Overrated, too old and not a prolific scorer."

Christopher Smith: "Lightweight player sorry not for us."

Jane Wisher: "Past it."

David Cousins: "Best days are behind him - not for me, we've got enough old men."

Andy Cutts-McKay: "Decent striker."

David Cousins: "He's 33 in two weeks - next!"

Adam Bailey: "Good player but his best days are behind him. Would rather take a punt on someone younger who’s banging in goals in the lower leagues. Personally I don’t think strikers is what we need, it’s creative midfielders."

Simon Butler: "Yeah he’s got the pace well at least he did and will work tirelessly for you up front, but not prolific enough for me. Just as bad a Waghorn, so no thankyou."

Antony Jackson: "Only ever hit double figures in a league campaign once in his career, despite 4 seasons in the Championship. Loads of running for little end product and as others have said, 33 soon and not of the ilk of a Rooney or Cole to pull it off."

Ben Beardsley: "Plays as a striker, loads of running, loads of effort, barely ever scores, at the end of his career, I'm describing Nugent btw, do we need another Nugent?"
