Stewart Donald has completed his takeover of Sunderland.

The English businessman takes over from American owner Ellis Short, who was facing increasing pressure to quit following consecutive demotions from the Premier League to League One.

Donald had been the owner of Eastleigh, who play in non-league, but he put the club up for sale and left his post when he saw that Sunderland was put up for sale.

After attending the final game of the season against Wolves, Donald pressed ahead with his takeover, which cost him £40m.

Short had written off all the club's debts prior to his sale, making the transition much smoother than it would have been if he had inherited a club with money troubles.

Sunderland fans expressed joy, relief and anticipation after Donald's purchase was confirmed, with many excited to see what the future holds.

It is a new dawn at The Stadium of Light and here are a selection of the best bits of social media reaction following the official completion of Donald's takeover.
