Sheffield United have really impressed in their first season back in the Championship.

They're delicately poised on the edge of the play off race, still hoping that a late surge could see them upset the current top six and put them in line for unlikely back to back promotions.

Even if they don't end up in the top six, their achievements are incredible considering just twelve months ago they were competing in League One. They've carried the momentum of the title win over to this campaign and have looked tough to beat and well organised.

Those performances comes from working well as a team, maintaining many of the squad that saw them promoted with additions here and there to strengthen, but not to overhaul. They must now look to the future, not just for new faces to add to the current crop, but also to several high-profile members of the current squad they really should be looking to tie down to lengthy deals.

Here's FLW's look at the three players whose futures need discussing sooner, rather than later.

34-year old Donaldson might not be the leading man at Bramall Lane, but he's made enough appearances to be considered an asset. He's played 29 times this season, scoring five goals including a brace to beat Sunderland 2-1, both goals at Villa Park in a 2-2 draw and a winner against Norwich at Carrow Road.

He's out of contract in the summer and despite his advancing years, he's proven himself to be a valuable addition to the squad. He came off the bench against Forest, Burton and Ipswich in the Blades' last three games and he still surely has some role to play at Bramall Lane

29-year old Basham has been a revelation this season, turning in consistent performances time and again. He's played 42 times and rarely lets the side down.

He's six-foot three and became part of Blades folklore in helping them to the League One title last season. His current deal expires at the end of the 2018/19 season, meaning he has just over a year left. Whilst he might not be getting any younger, he's proven himself at Championship level and will surely be an asset beyond next season, if they can agree terms.

13 goals from 39 outings, Billy Sharp is just as potent today as he's always was. He's in his third spell at Bramall Lane, finally proving a hit at the side he grew up supporting.

His 30 goals were crucial to last season's success and his return this season has demonstrated his longevity and ability to compete in the Championship. His current contract expires next season, but he's a proven Blades legend who will surely be looking to end his career at the club he started out with back in 2004.
