Paddy McNair thinks that Sunderland had the chances to win the game against Leeds.

The Black Cats drew 1-1 at Elland Road in an entertaining game that does little to ease Sunderland's relegation worries.

Chris Coleman went for an ambitious approach as he promised pre-match which looked like it was going to produce a win, but Pablo Hernandez equalised in the 72nd minute.

his means they have a seven-point gap to make up on Bolton in 21st place, so they look likely to go down with five games remaining.

McNair scored Sunderland's goal and this is what he had to say about the game according to the official Sunderland site: "We had chances to win the game when we went ahead."

"We both had chances so I suppose both teams can be a bit disappointed that they didn’t win."

"We had a lot of good chances and when you look at the last three games we could’ve had nine points but we don’t."

The Verdict

Sunderland played well but they didn't come away with the win which is what matters at this part of the season. McNair is right to ignore the role of luck in recent games because the Black Cats find themselves in this position through their own shortcoming throughout the entire season.

This was one of the better chances to come away with a win out of the games remaining because Leeds had little to play for aside from pride. Mid-table sides, such as Leeds, are the best teams to play at the end of a season because of the lack of need for a result which affects their motivation.

The fact that Coleman's ambition nearly brought Sunderland a win means that this style is likely to continue for the remainder of the season, so it should be exciting to watch for the fans, at the very least.
