Oxford United are targeting a swoop for former Rangers and Hearts defender Danny Wilson, as reported by the Sunday Mail via Football Scotland.

The 27-year-old is eighteen months into a three-year deal with Colorado Rapids, a side he joined after leaving Rangers in January 2018. He began his career with the Ibrox giants, but later moved to Liverpool, as well as loan spells with Blackpool and Bristol City.

He returned to Ibrox via Hearts and has won Scotland international honours, although all his appearances for his country came whilst with Liverpool.

He cost the Anfield giants £2m when first moving to England, but has now spent a year-and-a-half with Colorado, whom he's represented 31 times.

Wilson has now fallen onto the radar of Karl Robinson, who has also spoken of his desire to bring loan signings Luke Garbutt and Jerome Sinclair back to the Kassam next season.

That's in addition to Chris Cadden and Alex Gorrin, the Motherwell pair who have also caught his eye this summer. He's still waiting on an answer from Cadden, but captured Gorrin on a two-year deal last week.

The Verdict

Wilson once seemingly had the world at his feet, moving to Anfield for a good sum as a youngster. He serves as a warning to other young players being tempted by the bright lights of leading European clubs; the route isn't always straightforward.

Who would have thought that by the age of 27 he would be on the radar of a League One club, having chosen to move over to America?

He'd be a decent signing for Oxford though, he's got a good football upbringing even if he has lost his way a little. At 27-years-old he's approaching his prime too.

There are wholesale changes going on at Oxford. It'll be a big challenge for Robinson to make sure they gel correctly.
