Lewis, who joined the U's as a player in 1988, went on to make over 350 appearances, before taking a coaching role at the club in 1996.

The 50-year-old also had a brief caretaker role in 1999, before leaving the following season and returning in 2007 as the clubs youth team coach.

Lewis then went on to serve as assistant to Darren Patterson, and he would remain as part of the first team set up under four different U's bosses.

He also had a second spell as caretaker manager after Chris Wilder's departure in January 2014, before working under both Gary Waddock and current manager, Michael Appleton.

In addition to Lewis, the Oxford Mail also believes that Alasdair Lane is no longer part of the coaching staff at the Kassam Stadium.

The club's head of sports science arrived from Rotherham in 2012, aiding the clubs worsening injury problems.

Neither of the pair have yet made a comment, and neither has an official announcement been made. This is due to legal issues regarding the pair’s departure.

When this news is confirmed, then it would show a significant change to Appleton's back room set up, with just five weeks before the League Two campaign begins.

It is also unclear who would replace either of the vacated positions. It's rumoured that former U's winger and current youth team coach Chris Allen could make the step up. This also comes just one day after youth players Freddie Grant, AJ George and Robbie Cundy signed their first professional contracts with the club.
