Oxford United may not have got the result they wanted, but the experience for both the players and the supporters as the U's took to Austria will not be forgotten.

Oxford are on a pre-season tour of Austria
Oxford United drew 0-0 with Austrian side SC Wiener Neustadt

Michael Appleton’s side had travelled to face SC Wiener Neustadt, and despite the commute, around 200 Oxford fans made the journey to watch their sides goalless draw.

On the pitch, the Austrian side gave the League Two club a tough test, despite the U's fielding a relatively strong side, which included new signings Sam Slocombe, Liam Sercombe, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Taylor.

SC Wiener Neustadt, who were relegated from the top division in Austria last season, were almost behind early on as Alex MacDonald saw his effort deflected just over the bar, before another attempt from the former Burton Albion winger hit the post.

The U's, who arrived in Austria on Monday for training, were controlling midfield through Michael Collins and Sercombe, and were comfortable in possession.

As did the back four of George Baldock, Johnny Mullins, Jake Wright and Joe Skarz who were extremely solid with their defensive duties.

After the hour mark, winger Callum O'Dowda came on, but his two on target efforts lacked any venom. Young striker James Roberts also had a late chance but his effort was bundled away.

The Austrian side begin their season next week, whilst the U's have a few more weeks of training and friendlies before the welcoming recently-relegated Crawley Town to the Kassam Stadium on August 8.

United Line-up: Slocombe, Baldock (Long 46), Skarz, Mullins (Hawtin 82), Wright (Dunkley), Sercombe (Ashby 64), Collins (Ruffels 64 ), Roofe (O’Dowda 64), Hylton (Hoban 60), Taylor (Roberts 60), MacDonald (Rose 64)
