Oxford United manager Michael Appleton has admitted that his side fell short of expectations as they lost 1-0 at Conference side Woking in last night's pre-season friendly.

Having ended last season on an eight game unbeaten run, Michael Appleton has rebuilt his squad hopeful of continuing that form into the new season - however pre-season has not got off to the best of starts.

The U's, who began the game with the same side that fought out a goalless draw in Austria last week, lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.

The U's best chance came to new signing Ryan Taylor, but his header was saved by former U's keeper Jake Cole. Shortly after, John Goddard headed the games only goal past former Scunthorpe goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

Oxford United will be hoping for a promotion push next season, with the club now having a stronger financial backing, and this, combined with the players in the squad, it could help with the club's ambitions to play at a higher level.

The U’s head coach said to the Oxford Mail: “At the minute I think we look fit, but we don’t look sharp, certainly in the final third.

“The amount of times we made poor decisions 30 yards from goal was disappointing.

“Some of our most attacking players really lacked a bit of invention at times.”

Appleton reminded the players of their efforts in the last 15 games of the season, but told the side that last night's result was disappointing.

Appleton was also keen to ensure as many players as possible played the full 90 minutes, with eight outfield players achieving that.

The manager commented on Slocombe's performance as a positive after the new signing was forced to make a number of saves to keep the League Two side in the game.

Appleton said: “I’ve been delighted with Sam since he’s come in.

“He’s not had much to do in the games until this one, but I’ve seen it in training every day.

“I saw more of him in the game than I’d want, but that’s what he’s there to do.”

The U's, who have been tipped as one of the promotion favourites this season, begin their campaign at the Kassam Stadium against recently relegated Crawley Town on August 8.
