According to a report by Gloucestershire Live, Forest Green Rovers, Lincoln City and Oxford United are all readying summer moves for League Two star Carl Winchester.

Winchester is currently playing for Cheltenham Town, where he is the captain.

The 25-year-old has helped his side to a lower mid-table finish this season.

With one game left to play in the fourth tier, Cheltenham sit in 17th place - eight points clear of the drop zone.

But now a trio of Football League sides are weighing up a move for the Cheltenham skipper in his summer window.

Forest Green, who have managed to stay up in their first ever season in the Football League, are in the hunt for the once-capped Northern Ireland international while play-off hopefuls Lincoln City are also keen.

League One outfit Oxford United, who recently confirmed their status as a third tier side, are ready to compete with the fourth tier duo to sign Winchester.

The Belfast-born midfielder moved to England in 2010 when he joined Oldham Athletic from Linfield.

After seven seasons with the Latics, in which he amassed nearly 150 senior appearances for the club, he departed in January 2017 to join Cheltenham on a free transfer.

Winchester, who can play as a midfielder or as a right-back, is out of contract at Whaddon Road and is yet to decide whether to sign the extension he has been offered.

The Verdict

If any of these sides can snap up Winchester on a free transfer, then it would be a coup. At 25, he is entering the prime of his career and he boasts experience and leadership on the pitch. As well as this, the Northern Irishman is versatile, meaning he would be a useful asset for any League One or League Two side.
