Birmingham City have managed to win their last two Championship matches against Blackburn Rovers and Luton Town at St Andrews to bring themselves to within two points of the play-off places, and raise hopes that the club can finish inside the division’s top six for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

That season saw Birmingham trying to recover from suffer a heartbreaking relegation on the final day of the Premier League the year before, after the Blues endured a disastrous run of form in the second half of the campaign following them beating Arsenal 2-1 in the Carling Cup final at Wembley.

One of the important performers for Birmingham that season under Chris Hughton, as the Blues juggled Championship football with an appearance in the Europa League following their League Cup success, was midfielder Wade Elliott, who arrived at St Andrews on a two-year deal from Burnley in the summer of 2011.

Here then we take a look at the career Elliott enjoyed at St Anrews and take a look at how his career has panned out since leaving the club, as we ask the question “where is he now?”

Elliott, who had enjoyed a very successful six-year spell with Burnley making over 250 appearances and helping the Clarets earn promotion in the 2008/09 season, managed to establish himself as an important member of Hughton’s squad during the 2011/12 season, as the Blues targeted an immediate return to the Premier League, whilst also looking to make progress in the Europa League.

The midfielder made 29 appearances for Birmingham in the Championship during his first season at St Andrews, scoring two goals to help the Blues secure a fourth place finish and qualify for the play-offs where they were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Blackpool, whilst he also made five appearances in the Europa League, scoring his first goal the club against Maribor, as they finished third in their group.

The following season would see Elliott play an even prominent role in Birmingham’s Championship season, making 44 appearances and scoring six goals, as the Blues looked to stabilise under Lee Clark, who took over from Hughton in the summer, after the club endured some financial trouble and were placed under a transfer embargo at one stage, eventually finishing in 12th place.

The 2013/14 season would prove to be Elliott’s final season at St Andrews, and it was certainly a challenging one for Birmingham who had to come from 2-0 down on the final day to earn a point at Bolton Wanderers to keep themselves in the league, with the midfielder making 15 appearances in the first half of the campaign as Clark’s side struggled down the wrong end of the table, before being loaned out to Bristol City in January 2014.

Following Elliott’s loan spell at Ashton Gate during the second half of the 2013/14 season, where he reunited with Steve Cotterill who had signed him for Burnley back in 2005, the midfielder was signed on a permanent basis by the Robins in the summer of 2014 following his release from Birmingham – and he was immediately made the club’s captain for the 2014/15 season.

Elliott went on to play a crucial role in helping Bristol City secure promotion to the Championship, making 36 appearances for the club and scoring two goals as the Robins managed to secure the League One title and the EFL Trophy – and following the end of the 2014/15 season the midfielder announced his retirement from professional football.

The 40-year-old has since gone onto forge a career as a coach taking up the post of Bristol City’s under-21s which he held for the first half of the 2015/16 season, taking interim charge of the club’s first team alongside John Pemberton following Cotterill’s departure from the club in January 2016.

He then took up the position of assistant academy manager at Forest Green Rovers in October 2016, before moving to Stoke City to become the under-23s’ assistant manager in April 2017, and that is his current role, having briefly managed Stoke’s under-23s in 2018.
