Birmingham City moved up to eighth in the Championship standings last night after securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Barnsley, with one player in particular producing an eye-catching display for Pep Clotet's side.

In what was his fourth appearance of the 2019/20 campaign for the Blues, Marc Roberts excelled in the heart of the club's back five as he played a major role in minimising the Tykes' attacking threat at St Andrew's.

The 29-year-old also managed to create havoc with his long throw-ins as Krystian Pedersen came close to opening the scoring in the first-half of the clash after connecting with one of Roberts' deliveries.

Having been frustrated by Barnsley's possession-based tactics for large sways of the game, Birmingham finally took the lead in the 69th minute via a Lukas Jutkiewicz header, before summer signing Alvaro Gimenez sealed all three points with a delightful chip.

Making reference to his side's instant response to last Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, Roberts tweeted: "Great reaction from the weekend disappointment."

Upon reading this comment, plenty of the Birmingham fans took to Twitter to laud the defender for his performance against Barnsley.

Birmingham will be aiming to make it back-to-back victories in the Championship when they head to the Liberty Stadium on Sunday to face Swansea City.
