Sheffield Wednesday progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening, as they ran out 2-0 winners over League One side Rochdale.
Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass’ goals proved to be enough to see Garry Monk’s side move into the next round of the competition, where they’ll take on either Ipswich Town or Fulham, who play at Portman Road on Wednesday evening.
It means that the Owls have now won their last two matches, and will be eager to build on these impressive showings as the season progresses.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk made a number of changes to his squad for the match against Rochdale, as he looks to keep his squad fresh for the early stages of this year’s campaign.
One player that came into the starting XI was young defender Liam Shaw, and he caught the eye with an impressive performance in the Owls back-line by keeping a clean sheet.
Shaw took to Twitter to express his delight at progressing to the next round of the competition, and was praised by a number of supporters for his performance.
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass was quick to respond to his social media post, and labelled Shaw’s performance as ‘outstanding’.
Outstanding young man 👏🏼

He’s certainly made a good impression.
Not many would have predicted that Shaw would be in contention to challenge for a regular spot in the Sheffield Wednesday defence at the start of the season.
But his performance against Rochdale caught the eye for all the right reasons, and Garry Monk will have a welcome selection dilemma heading into their match this weekend.
It’s great to see senior players like Windass praising the younger members of the Owls squad, as you’d imagine it’ll be a real positive for their confidence.
