It’s set to be an incredibly summer for Sunderland.
The Black Cats will be spending a fourth successive campaign in League One after falling short in the play-offs after a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Lincoln City in recent weeks.
However with a number of key players such as Lee Burge, Luke O’Nien, Max Power, Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke out of contract, it means that Lee Johnson could be gearing up for a busy summer in the transfer market.
Football League World exclusively revealed that goalkeeper Burge was attracting the interest of Middlesbrough, meaning that a new goalkeeper could be top of the list for the Wearsiders.
It least that was the case until Monday night’s under-23 Premier League 2 Division 2 play-off final.
Sunderland took on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in a contest that ultimately went the way of the Eagles after a penalty shootout defeat, but one man who really impressed was Anthony Patterson.
The young stopper has been incredibly impressive for Sunderland’s development side this term, including two appearances in the Papa John’s Trophy earlier in the season.
Supporters have been really impressed by the 21-year-old, and taking to Twitter, supporters were quick to express their excitement at how the goalkeeper is developing.
I feel the young players going to the first team next season will be:
– Josh Hawkes
– Anthony Patterson
– Ollie Younger
– Dan Neil
All had a cracking game today and I can’t wait to see more

Gutted for Sunderland tonight.
So many positives to take, though.

Good performance from Sunderland 23's at Selhurst Park, first half better than the second. Josh Hawkes has been impressive for the Black Cats and so has Dan Neil he's controlled the game for Sunderland. Anthony Patterson has been superb though some big saves. Extra-time underway.

Thread on what Sunderland should do in the summer transfer window.
GK- Controversial but let burge go and have Patterson as a number 2, deserves a shot as he’s looked decent when playing. Get Bursik on loan from Stoke. Not sure if this is realistic but Pantillimon on a free?.

Apparently Patterson was excellent last night.
Anyone know how I delete the many tweets I have made saying I didn't think he was good enough?#SAFC

Unlucky to lose like that. Plenty of positive performances and a good core of players who could make the step up to the first team. MOTM performance by Patterson with Lee Johnson watching. The future looks a lot brighter for the U23s than it did a year ago. #SAFC #SAFCU23s https://t.co/iwaiv11em1

Credit to the u23’s tonight, battled the game out right up until the very last minute which is funnily enough the exact opposite to what our so called “first team” did the other night. Hawkes, Younger, Neil and Patterson have all got to play first team football next season. #SAFC

Gutted for the U23s. A solid performance but just missed out. Big shout out to Anthony Patterson, outstanding performance. We go again next season. HA'WAY THE LADS
