Former Yeovil Town manager Darren Way is being lined up for a role with Bristol City as their new under-23 manager.

Former under-23 manager Luke Williams recently left the club and took up an assistant manager position with MK Dons, and rumours that Way could took the vacant role after preliminary talks have intensified.

Alex Ball, who was the under-23s assistant to Williams before his departure, has stepped up to take the two previous under-23 games, a 2-1 win away at Crystal Palace and a 1-0 win away at Ipswich Town.

Way is the leading contender for the vacant post, and already has a good relationship with Lee Johnson, having played alongside him for Yeovil between 2001 and 2006, as well as coaching Jamie McAllister when the current City first-team coach played for Yeovil between 2012 and 2014.

The 40-year-old Way has found himself out of work since March, having managed Yeovil for four years and coached them through 189 games after taking over in December 2015.

He had also previously worked as a scout, coach and assistant manager at Huish Park, having been forced to retire from playing early at the age of 31 following a car accident.

The Verdict

Way would be a good appointment to blood the next set of academy stars at Ashton Gate, and his extensive knowledge of the south-west scene is bound to help them pick up some young gems.

Way has an excellent relationship with Lee Johnson already and the pair would be able to strike up a partnership quickly to try and make the transition for under-23 players heading into the first team easier.
