Speaking to the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, has revealed why he reacted angrily towards Leeds United when the two sides met over the Easter period.

Newcastle dominated the clash at St James’ Park on Good Friday, and Jamaal Lascelles’ goal looked like handing Rafa Benitez’s side a 1-0 victory.

However, during five minutes of injury-time, Leeds equalised through Chris Wood, with both players and coaching staff celebrating wildly.

Pictures emerged of Elliot, who was an unused substitute on the night, reacting angrily following Leeds’ late goal, and the goalkeeper has now revealed why that was, he said: “I don’t lose my temper very often.

“But there’s a way you win and a way you celebrate.

“I just thought a couple of things were out of order there.”

That draw, combined with Easter Monday’s defeat to Ipswich Town looked like seriously denting Newcastle’s promotion hopes, but Huddersfield Town failed to capitalise on the Magpies’ dropped points.

Benitez’s side secured promotion on Monday evening, when they recorded a 4-1 victory over Preston North End at St James’ Park.

The Magpies are four-points behind Brighton and Hove Albion, and with just two fixtures of the season remaining, Benitez’s side are looking to defy the odds by clinching the Sky Bet Championship title.
