Sunderland slipped to their fourth defeat in eight games under Phil Parkinson last night, which has led many fans of the North East club to call for the Black Cats boss to leave.

Parkinson's side were beaten 3-0 by League Two strugglers Scunthorpe, meaning they crashed out of the EFL Trophy at the group stages.

In the 66th minute, Lee Novak opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the hosts after Luke O'Nien had been sent off for bringing down Abo Eisa inside the box.

Scunthorpe added insult to injury late-on, with goals from Eisa and Novak capping off the victory.

The result means that Parkinson has now won just twice in his first eight games in charge of the North East club, suffering defeat in four of those.

His next chance to try and improve that record looks set to come against Gillingham in the FA Cup First Round replay next Tuesday, though it has been suggested that game could be postponed due to the international break.

Black Cats supporters were reportedly singing "you're not fit to wear the shirt" from the away end but it is not just the players that they've directed their anger at.

Many Sunderland fans took to Twitter to call for a change in management after Parkinson's shaky start at the Stadium of Light.
