Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has suggested that he is optimistic his new contract with the club will be finalised soon.

The 24-year-old emerged as the Owls' first-choice shot-stopper in recent months, moving above Keiren Westwood in the pecking order and starting every Championship game since late November.

His current deal at the club is set to expire this summer but, according to the Sheffield Star, negotiations are currently underway between the goalkeeper's representatives and the club over a new contract.

When pressed about when the new deal was expected to be completed, Dawson told the Sheffield Star: "I hope so.

“I don't really know where we are at the minute, but hopefully it will be soon. "I think it might be soon.
“I am hoping it will be very soon."

Dawson made the switch from rivals Sheffield United as an academy player in 2012 and has since developed through the ranks at Wednesday.

The 24-year-old made his debut in 2016 and has gone on to make 57 appearances for the Owls in total.

His breakthrough in the first team came following the injury to Keiren Westwood last season, with Dawson making 26 appearances in the 2018/19 Championship campaign.

Westwood reprised his role as number one at the start of this term but after some shaky performances, Garry Monk gave Dawson the opportunity and he has grabbed hold of it with both hands.

The Verdict

This should be music to the ears of Wednesday fans as not only does it appear a deal is close, clearly Dawson is passionate about staying at the Yorkshire club.

He's put in some impressive performances since moving ahead of Westwood in the pecking order and would likely not have been short of suitors as a free agent in the summer.

However, it seems both club and player want the same thing–a new deal–so that is not an issue that either of them will have to worry about.

At just 24, Dawson has the potential to be the Wednesday keeper for years to come.
