Luke Ayling has piled the praise on Leeds United’s supporters for their continued backing over the course of the 2017/18 campaign.
It has been a difficult year for Leeds in the Sky Bet Championship, with a play-off push not coming and the Whites finishing a disappointing 13th.
Leeds had looked like they would be in contention after a strong first-half of the season, but since the turn of the year, the Whites have recorded just four victories, leaving them in mid-table.
Despite some poor performances, Leeds’ fans have backed Paul Heckingbottom’s squad, with Ayling singling them out for praise following the end of the season.
The 26-year-old compared the support he and his teammates have received to last season, when Leeds were challenging for promotion, admitting he felt the level of support had been stepped up.
Ayling told Leeds’ official website: “The fans this year have been unreal, last year we were up there and you expect the fans to be behind you.
“When things have gone bad this year, the fans have stayed with us and stepped it up from the first year, they have been unbelievable. The away fans sell out every game, we could probably double our away allocation every week and sell it out.
“They have been our shining light this year, with how they have backed us through everything, they have been class.”
Ayling has missed the majority of the second-half of the season through an ankle injury, but made his first appearance since New Year’s Day over the weekend.
The right-back completed 90 minutes of Sunday’s 2-0 victory over QPR, as goals from Kemar Roofe and Kalvin Phillips secured a positive end to the season for the Whites.
Supporters will appreciate Ayling’s kind words, as it has been a difficult year for them.
Next season, Leeds’ squad need to deliver for a fanbase who are becoming increasingly frustrated in the Championship.
There have been some positives this season, but lessons are going to have to be learnt throughout the club if a promotion challenge is to come.
