Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi has added to his ranks with the promotion chasers reaching an agreement with Barcelona over the signing of former Arsenal youngster Marcus McGuane, according to a report by Noorhollands Dagblad.

Following his move to the La Masia academy in January 2018, McGuane went on to make 24 appearances for Barcelona B before being loaned out to Dutch second tier outfit Telstar at the beginning of this season in a deal that if to be broken, will require compensation to be agreed.

So will McGuane be a good addition at the City Ground, is he needed and do you think he would be a regular starter?

"He would be an exciting addition.

"The 20-year-old was extremely highly-rated a few years ago and whilst his career hasn't taken off since, that talent will still be there and he has done well with Telstar this season.

"That's not to say he is going to force his way into the Forest XI immediately, because Lamouchi has a lot of options to choose from and the team have had an excellent season so far, but he could be a big player in the years to come.

"The fact Barcelona saw enough in McGuane to bring him in says a lot but he isn't going to break through in Spain so a move could benefit him."

“McGuane certainly has vast potential to develop into an excellent midfielder over the next few years, which is why the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal have been keen on developing the 20-year-old over the last few years in their respective youth set ups.

“The midfielder is now at the sort of age where he needs to start playing regular competitive football, and he has been doing that so far this term whilst out on loan at Telstar, but a move to Nottingham Forest would certainly provide him with an opportunity to get regular game time at the higher level of the Championship.

“However, the Reds do have a lot of options in midfield, with the likes of Alfa Semedo, Samba Sow, Ben Watson, Ryan Yates and Tiago Silva all competing for a place in Sabri Lamouchi’s starting line-up, which could make it a challenge for McGuane to force his way into the side should he make the move.

“Forest are likely to have to pay a fee towards the cancellation of his loan deal with Telstar, and that could be a bit of a risk given McGuane might not feature heavily for the Reds during the rest of the season, but the 20-year-old’s potential means he is certainly worth the risk.”

Josh Cole

“Although there is no doubting McGuane’s talent, Forest ought to consider holding fire on a move for the midfielder this month.

“Given that he has yet to make a senior appearance for Barcelona, the 20-year-old may not be ready to feature on a regular basis at Championship level.

“Currently on loan at Dutch side Telstar, McGuane is benefitting from being able to play on a regular basis which is something that may not be guaranteed at Forest due to the presence of Ben Watson and Samba Sow.

“Therefore, unless Lamouchi is certain that the midfielder has what it takes to succeed in the second-tier, he ought to focus instead on signing players who could take the Reds to new heights in the not too distant future.”
