Portsmouth striker Jamal Lowe is a man attracting an awful lot of attention right now, with Pompey rejecting a bid from Wigan Athletic in the last day or so.

The pacey wide man had a great season for Kenny Jackett's side, bringing goals and assists to their play-off assault. We talk to FLW writer Gary Hutchinson about Jamal Lowe; why he's so special and what the future might hold for him.

Who is Jamal Lowe?

Jamal Lowe is a 24-year-old attacker, comfortable on either flank but usually found on the right.

He can play through the centre too, much of his game is about raw pace. He loves to carry the ball forward and find space behind the defence.

What’s his background?

He was born in Harrow and spent the early part of his career on the books of Barnet. He struggled to break through there though, enjoying loan spells at a number of clubs including Boreham Wood and Hemel Hempstead.

He later wound up with Hemel permanently, after a spell with St Albans, and that’s where he made his name. He excelled in the National League South and earned a move to Pompey in January 2017.

What has he done to stand out so much?

He’s been outstanding for them. In total he’s bagged 29 times in 109 outings, but he really settled last season.

He scored 15, made a further eight goals and was key to their surge up the table. Oddly, he was dropped for the second leg of their play-off semi-final and Pompey looked toothless as a result.

Who is interested?

Wigan and Millwall are the two confirmed sides, but that’s only going to be the tip of the iceberg.

He’s been excellent all season and both Leeds and Cardiff were mentioned earlier in the season as well.

Others will join the queue, especially if he looks like he’s on his way out of Fratton Park.

Could he make the jump to the Championship?

Absolutely. He’s got a raw quality to his game that would suit the higher level. He can really punish a tiring full back, but he has cleverness to his approach as well.

He might be afforded a little more time in the Championship and that’s when he’s at his best; with the ball at his feet.

Is a move likely?

It’s almost certain, yes. Lowe will want to test himself at a higher level and Pompey will see the need to get him moved on now, before his contract runs down next summer and he walks for nothing.

They want £3m, they’ve refused a bid of £1.5m. My gut feeling is he’ll go for around £2.5 and probably to one of the top end Championship clubs.
