Jamal Lowe has often featured on the score sheet for Portsmouth this season, but only once has his name been the only one.

Goals against Oxford United, Plymouth Argyle, and Peterborough all came when Pompey were already leading. Only his goal on the opening day at home to Luton Town decided a tie that would not have otherwise resulted in a Pompey win.

But is it then harsh to say Lowe only scores irrelevant goals, or is it ok to accept he scores solidifiers rather than winners?

Go back to the opening day of the League One season and a sunny day on the South Coast. Fratton Park was bathed in sunshine as Luton rolled into town to begin the season, and Lowe’s name was a surprise inclusion having picked up a knock against Utrecht the week before.

That didn’t stop the hot prospect from getting Fratton Park rocking after 16-minutes when he hit home a close-range goal when Ronan Curtis rolled the ball back to him. A goal that proved to be pivotal as Luton squandered a range of chances to draw level.

Lowe has carried this form throughout the opening 10 games to score a further five goals with his most recent effort pulling Portsmouth level with Rochdale on a day the Pompey strike force regularly failed to find the target.

Jamal’s equaliser, a well-worked goal with captain Brett Pitman, may not have won the game. But it worked as the foundations for a Portsmouth win by capitalising on mounting pressure the Dale keeper had so far controlled.
