Cardiff City made the announcement on Wednesday that their assistant manager Paul Trollope would become the successor to Russell Slade, who has been given a new Head of football role at the club.

Paul Trollope

Slade's step-down from the manager role was always likely to be on the cards, with the club failing to achieve their target of a top six place this season.

However some of the Bluebirds fans have addressed a divided opinion on the appointment of Paul Trollope.

Several names that were thrown into the ring when Slade departed was former England and Newcastle boss, Steve McClaren. Other names included Cardiff legend Craig Bellamy, who would have made his first stint in management at the club.

Despite Trollope’s young managerial age, he has had a bright start to his coaching career.

Managing Bristol Rovers at the age of just 33, he guided them to the FA Trophy Final in 2005 and a year later achieved promotion with Rovers in the League Two Play-Off final.

The sacking of Trollope in 2010 caught a lot of the Rovers fans off guard as he was highly regarded at the Memorial Stadium.

His success with the South West club caught the attention of Swansea City, who were majorly interested in taking Trollope on board before they opted for Brendon Rodgers.

Trollope has had coaching stints at Birmingham City and Norwich City before joining the coaching staff at the Bluebirds in February 2015.

He later succeeded Kit Symons as Chris Coleman's assistant in July last year and was part of the set-up that guided Wales to their first major tournament in 57 years when they will appear at the European Championship in France in a few weeks time.

The 43 year old's appointment has come to the surprise for many of the Cardiff fans who would have preferred a more experienced manager or somebody that is going to drag the large crowds back to the stadium.

The club’s decision to appoint Trollope could suggest that they want continuity within the squad. He does have a high reputation as a coach and has made a big impact since arriving as the number 2 in South Wales.

Trollope undertook large amounts of Cardiff’s training sessions while Slade was at the club and will be familiar with the surroundings at the club.

Although, Trollope has a high role with the Wales set-up, he has no experience of managing at Championship level and he will need to make an instant impression when the new season springs upon them in August.

Cardiff is a highly ambitious club with fans that can be extremely fickle. The fans quickly turned on Russell Slade when they were not getting the right results and were unhappy with his style of play.

I feel that Trollope is a great coach, but with the Championship becoming tougher every year and clubs spending big on players, Trollope might not be able to attract the quality players for them to succeed next season.

Under the helm of an experienced manager like Steve McClaren, he has been in the game a lot longer than Trollope, and managed to persuade players like Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey to join a struggling Premier League side.

This will be a big summer for Cardiff and Trollope will be out to prove his critics wrong and show that he is well and truly worthy to guide the Bluebirds back to the Premier League.
