Karl Darlow was Newcastle United's number one choice between the sticks.

But his shocking mistake against Norwich City has cast doubt over the goalkeeping position.

Darlow rushed out of his goal and misjudged a clearance which allowed Cameron Jerome to tap into an empty net for Norwich.

And while Darlow has been solid for the majority of the season, this is not his first mistake.

He replaced Matz Sels, who was the preferred choice for Benitez at the start of the season.

The Belgian joined in the summer but a string of underwhelming displays and the occasional error, Benitez lost faith in him and selected Darlow as the first choice goalkeeper.

Benitez is currently in a sticky situation: who should he select as his main goalkeeper?

After Newcastle allowed Freddie Woodman and Tim Krul to leave on loan, Benitez has three top class options.

All three of his goalkeepers are solid players to have at Championship level.

One of his options is to bypass Karl Darlow and Matz Sels - because they have both made mistakes this season - and give Rob Elliot a chance to impress again.

The Irishman was one of Newcastle's top performers last season in the Premier League and has always looked in control between the sticks.

His time at St James' Park has mainly been spent deputising for Tim Krul but in the Dutchman's absence and considering the erratic performances from Darlow and Sels, Benitez might return to Elliot.

Elliot was unfortunate to miss out on the start of the season through injury but he will be eager to get back on the playing field and show Benitez why he should be starting each week.

An alternative option for Benitez is to restore Matz Sels to the line-up.

The Belgium international is clearly a talented goalkeeper but, like many before him, he is struggling to adapt to life in England.

Maybe he will be better when he is given a second chance?

However, I believe that Benitez should persevere with Darlow.

Darlow has Championship experience from his time at Nottingham Forest and has the makings of a top level goalkeeper.

He is not only a shot stopper but also commands his area and has safe hands.

However, he just needs to eradicate the errors from his game and the Norwich mistake will be a learning curve for him.

If I were Benitez, I'd stick with Darlow for the Aston Villa clash on Monday.
