Opinion: Who is the best striker in the Championship?

Published

on

There are plenty of strikers in the Championship who would willingly crown themselves as the best striker in the league. I am sure many supporters who watch this division would disagree with one another on who claims to be the most prolific forward.

Being a striker isn’t just down to scoring goals, but also the ability to bring others into play – especially if your manager has put you upfront as a lone attacker. Several names, in my opinion, can deservedly argue their case and I will be looking at who comes up with the best argument.

Firstly, I have to mention Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian joined the north-east side last summer from Belgian outfit Anderlecht for a fee of £13 million. The 22-year-old was unable to become the striker which everyone hoped he would be, having suffered relegation to the Championship for the first time since 2009 at St. James’ Park.

Mitrovic struggled to start the 2016/17 campaign with a bang after being suspended for the first four matches after a red card on the final day of last season against Tottenham Hotspur. His second-tier debut came in mid-September in a 6-0 victory against Queens Park Rangers. Whilst the international forward hasn’t got that many goals, his reputation allows him to certainly be on that list.

Tammy Abraham can stake his claim to be the best striker in the Championship as well. The Bristol City attacker, on loan from Premier League giants Chelsea, has impressed many this season. The 19-year-old has nine goals in the league and two assists, for someone who has no previous experience in the Football League, Abraham has certainly caught the eye.

My final candidate for this list is Leeds United’s Chris Wood. The New Zealand international has seven league goals to his tally this season, but has been single-handedly lifted Garry Monk’s team up the table following their lacklustre start to the campaign. I am not saying Wood is the best striker in the Championship but he’s got my vote. He has been up top as a lone forward by Monk, and for any player to get as many goals as he has with just himself upfront then he deserves some praise for his efforts.

Who do you think is the best striker in the Championship? Is it someone I have mentioned or have I missed them out? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
