Sam Byram is a natural right back who has been adapted into a right winger and he is now playing an integral role in Neil Redfearn’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Where is Byram's best position?
Where is Byram's best position?

But the question is, where is his best position and where is he most influential to the side?

Well we don’t know yet if he is accommodating the right wing position until the summer, where the club may finally sign a winger, or if Redfearn is moulding him into an advanced winger for the long term future.

ex-Manchester United defender Scott Wootton has stepped in at right back, to allow Byram to push forward, and it is safe to say he does not look comfortable in this position as he is naturally a centre back.

Many expected Gaetano Berardi to fill in on the right flank but instead he is playing left back to give young Charlie Taylor a similar freedom to Byram on the left hand side.

So this leaves Redfearn with a big decision to make in the summer, whether he signs a right back or a right-winger.

Because Byram has always been one of the most composed players on the ball for the Whites and he has always been able to make his mark on the game from right back, whether that be controlling the tempo and keeping the ball ticking over or making forward overlapping runs to put the team on the front foot.

He is very convincing at right back but in United’s current situation plenty of people consider his ability wasted in defence, due to our lack of wingers in the side.

Redfearn has instilled great confidence in the 21-year-old and he seems to be playing with no fear on the front foot and he has chipped in with a few goals, with three in his last nine games.

So for now his best position in the side is as a winger but his future will depend on whether or not Redfearn can sign a winger who is better or at least as good as Byram.

Because if not, he is left with no other choice than to play him in a more advanced role, meaning the club will be on the look out for a new right back to support him.
