Preston manager Simon Grayson made the decision to bring on Eoin Doyle in the 80th minute in an attempt to salvage a point against 10 man Sheffield Wednesday.

The former Cardiff striker originally did just what he was asked to do when he got a goal back for Preston. The goal was followed by relentless pressure from the away side where it looked a real possibility that they could take at least a point from the game.

But what followed was a disgrace to the club. After Eoin Doyle played the ball through to Marnick Vermijl, which seemed the right decision, fellow striker Jermaine Beckford became infuriated at Doyle's choice not to pass to him.

The former Leeds man reacted in a disgraceful manner as he angrily approached his teammate, pushing him in the chest as the two went head to head. As other players did their best to intervene, it looked as though Doyle attempted to punch his strike partner, which saw him and Beckford both removed from the pitch.

Manager Simon Grayson has labelled it an 'embarrassment' and has confirmed that the two will be reprimanded but the extent of the repercussions are unknown.

The double red card has caused a huge amount of fury among the Preston fan base with many of them calling for the two to be sacked by the club.

As a Preston fan myself, I feel ashamed writing this article as for the last few years we've prided ourselves on the camaraderie in the dressing room and the togetherness of the lads.

What happened at Hillsborough is nothing short of a disgrace and the duo will have to work very hard to get back in the good books of the manager and the fans - that's if they're lucky enough to be given the opportunity.

The minimum suspension which the two will face is a three match ban but there could yet be further action taken either by the club or by the FA.

This now leaves North End looking very short up top with Jordan Hugill and Simon Makienok being the only out and out strikers with Stevie May yet to return to full fitness after 12 months out.

So after two very poor home displays and yesterday's antics, it's probably not the best time to go into a local derby in front of the nation on TV but Preston will have to re-group and show the spirit which we have seen so often in recent times.
