Come November, not many supporters would have imagined Gillingham to be within touching distance of the League One summit.
To most on paper, the team is in and amongst what could be deemed a standard quality League One outfit but a number of variables have combined to make Gillingham a formidable outfit to date.
Gills boss Justin Edinburgh has installed a never say die attitude amongst their ranks, and this is evident in games where they have come from behind to secure victories against Fleetwood Town, Bradford City and Scunthorpe United respectively.
This attitude has been coupled hand in hand with the work rate and fitness off the players at the Priestfield Stadium, which started in their tiresome pre-season trip to France.
Edinburgh’s emphasis on fitness is enhanced by the number of young players he is trusting to lead the team, with an average age of just 23.9 amongst the lowest in the league.
The fitness and effort coming through from Gillingham’s young guns coupled with the experience of pro’s like John Egan and Cody McDonald, the Kent club are beginning to raise a few eyebrows as to when and if this stint at the higher end of League One will end any time soon.
