Opinion: West Brom star should make one sacrifice this summer and take key transfer decision amid Leeds United and West Ham battle

The next few weeks are going to be crucial for the long-term future of West Brom’s in-demand star Matheus Pereira, with the 25-year-old set to face a major decision over where he will move to.

It seems inevitable now amongst all of the mounting transfer speculation that Pereira will be moving on from the Hawthorns this summer and secure himself a move back to top-flight football.

There will be few who could possibly begrudge the 25-year-old that move concerned with West Brom considering the excellent form he produced in a struggling side last term in the Premier League. A tally of 11 goals and six assists in 33 appearances was some going for him.

There have been two major transfer updates regarding his future now. The first of which came from the Daily Express reporter Ryan Taylor, who revealed that West Ham have now opened talks with Pereira’s representatives over a potential switch to the Hammers this summer.

While ESPN Brazil have reported that Leeds United remain very much still in the hunt for his signature and that Periera is interested in making that move to Elland Road.

However, the report from ESPN Brazil added that Pereira has been preferring the chance to move to a side that are going to compete in European club competition next season. Although it is thought that would not deter him from potentially moving to Leeds.

The choice between West Ham and Leeds will not be an easy one to make for Pereira. On the face of it, the Hammers should be in pole position considering they managed to secure a top-six finish in the Premier League last term. They are therefore set to compete in the UEFA Europa League next season.

However, Leeds United have one major draw within their ranks that Pereira has to consider this summer. The chance to work with Marcelo Bielsa week in week out on the training ground has to be something that he seriously factors into his decision-making process.

The higher or lower West Brom transfer fee quiz – can you get 20/20?

Was Matheus Pereira's £7.43million transfer fee higher or lower than Grady Diangana's?

You only have to examine what Bielsa has managed to do with the likes of Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and of course Raphina to see how good he is at extracting the best qualities from a player with talent and getting them to take their game to the next level.

Raphina, in the context of Pereira, is perhaps the best example to turn to. He arrived at Elland Road last year and he just got better and better throughout his first year in English football.

The attacker has flair and can produce moments of quality out of nothing, but his work rate and ability off the ball has been enhanced as well by Bielsa’s coaching.

That has seen the attacker emerge on the radar of clubs like Liverpool after just a single season with the Whites. You can imagine that Bielsa would be able to make a similar transformation for Pereira next season if he manages to secure his services this summer.

Moving to West Ham this summer would get Pereira the immediate chance to showcase what he can do on the European stage.

However, whilst Moyes is an excellent manager and has done a tremendous job with the Hammers in his second spell in charge, he would not be able to improve the attacker’s game to the extent Bielsa could do.

Take Said Benrahma as an example, the attacker excelled for Brentford in the Championship, and whilst he had a decent enough first term with West Ham last season he did not really take his game to the next level.

A move to Elland Road would therefore be the best one for the long-term for Pereira this summer, rather than the short-term.

He should therefore be prepared to sacrifice a season of European football and make the switch to Leeds if it becomes a straight choice between the Hammers and Bielsa’s side.
