Newcastle United are back in the driving seat to lift the Sky Bet Championship title at the end of the campaign, after a magnificent 2-1 win at fellow title chasers Brighton and Hove Albion last Tuesday.

A quite bizarre goal from Mo Diame and a well-worked goal capped off by Ayoze Perez sealed the comeback for Rafa Benitez' men, after the Seagulls took the lead through Glenn Murray at the AMEX.

It was a week capped off in style, after the Geordies then went on to defeat David Wagner's men 3-1 at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday evening, thanks to goals from Matt Ritchie, Daryl Murphy and the returning Dwight Gayle.

This now leaves Benitez' men 5 points clear of Brighton, and also find themselves 11 points clear of Huddersfield in third place, however the gap at the top of the table could have been much more extended if it wasn't for lacklustre performances and inconsistent form.

One player who doesn't seem to come under scrutiny, however, is Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is seen as a fan favourite at St. James' Park.

The 22-year old signed for the Magpies from Belgian side R.S.C Anderlecht for a reported fee of £13million, at the beginning of what was a dismal campaign for the Tyneside club last term.

The powerful forward still managed to score 9 goals in that dreadful relegation season though, which is probably one of the reasons why the Toon Army still rate him very highly - but you have to ask, what is Mitrovic offering to Newcastle this season?

As well as being unable to control his anger on the pitch, Mitrovic has managed to score just 4 times for the club thus far this term, despite being given a considerable amount of game time whilst top goalscorer Dwight Gayle endured a spell on the sidelines.

And if its his attacking prowess and presence that Rafa Benitez wants to utilise the Serbian for, then Daryl Murphy is more than capable of leading the line alongside Gayle for the Magpies; the Irishman has scored 3 goals in just 7 appearances for the club

It was recently reported that the club rejected an approach for the striker in January from French giants PSG, who were allegedly willing to pay £15million for the 6 foot 2 man, and my question, as well as a portion of the Toon Army's would be, why not accept it?

Newcastle are reportedly tracking Burnley's Andre Gray and Hull City's Harry Maguire, with Rafa Benitez looking to add much needed quality to his ranks if the club are to avoid relegation from the Premier League next season, (that's if they get promoted this year, of course.)

Mitrovic's sale would have gave Newcastle the funds to purchase these players, which seemed to a problem in the Magpies' disappointing January transfer window.

And despite netting 36 times in 69 games in Belgium, I for one feel as if it is time for Mitrovic to depart St. James' Park in the summer, as he should have done in January...
