Opinion: The return of this Leeds United star should hand the club a welcome boost

Last week Garry Monk confirmed news that was music to the ears of most Leeds United fans, that Charlie Taylor was almost fit enough to resume training with the first-team squad.

The Leeds’ left-back has been out of action since December’s 1-0 victory over Brentford at Elland Road, where Taylor left the pitch just before the hour.

Leeds are in a good position in the Sky Bet Championship, sitting fifth in the league, and look on course for a Play-Off appearance at the end of the season.

The recent spell without their first-choice full-back, Taylor, has not affected the club too much, with Gaetano Berardi performing admirably in his absence.

Taylor has been a regular feature for Leeds in the last two-seasons, since he replaced Stephen Warnock as the club’s left-back in 2015, and his return to fitness might be key for the Whites heading into the final three months of the season.

Berardi’s defensive performances have been solid, and you will always get 100% from the Swiss international, but he is naturally a right-back and is limited attacking down the left-flank.

Taylor’s return will offer Monk’s side more balance in both defence and attack, along with giving the Leeds’ boss more cover going into a hectic period for the club.

Taylor has made 22 league appearances for Leeds this season and was ever present in the Championship before his injury.

The academy product will offer the club a boost both on and off the pitch as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

There was doubt whether Taylor would still be with Leeds after the January transfer window, after the left-back handed in a transfer request during the summer transfer window.

With the 23-year old out of contract in the summer, it was expected the club might cash in on the left-back last month.

However, despite his contract running down, Taylor is still at Elland Road and will no doubt play a major part as the club look for promotion to the Premier League.

Taylor may well become the latest academy product to leave Leeds this summer, but if he can play a part in helping the club back to the top-flight, he will leave Elland Road with a legendry status.
