The English Championship can often be the place where many players find their feet in football.

Young men looking to build their careers in search of that all important big career move to the Premier League.

On the other side of that, there are the players who drop down from the top-flight, and seemingly find their level, excelling in a way they have never done so before.

Both these cases serve relevance in any position, but you could argue are even more prevalent with strikers.

Strikers are there to score the goals to fire their clubs to success. They are the players clubs invest heavily in, often paying large fees and large wages to them in return for firing them to the promised land of Premier League football.

This season more than ever, there is a wealth of striking talent in the league. The Championship is always renowned as one of the most exciting leagues to watch, and the strikers are the key to this excitement.

In this article, I look at the THREE best strikers currently plying their trade in the second tier of English football......

Andre Gray

Gray is the top scorer this season for a Burnley side who are looking to bounce straight back to the top-flight.

Signed from Brentford for a club record £9m in the summer, Gray has delivered the goods for Sean Dyche and his team with a string or super performances leading to 16 goals already.

His meteoric rise in football is more proof that there are hidden gems down in the lower leagues – he was playing at Hinckley Town as recent as 2012.

If Burnley are to be promoted this season, keeping Gray and keeping him fit and firing will be absolutely key.

Ross McCormack

Ross McCormack is a seasoned Championship campaigner, and simply oozes class.

He is a consistent goal scorer for whoever he plays for, and has enjoyed prolific spells at Leeds, Cardiff, and more recently Fulham.

The Scottish international has scored at least 15 goals in the last two seasons, and has already hit that total for this season with four months still to play.

It remains to be seen whether McCormack will stay with Fulham during the transfer window, after all, he did command an £11m fee when signing in 2014 and Fulham would be looking to recoup at least that amount.

There is no doubting his quality though, and a Premier League team or a team at the top of the Championship may well see it as money well spent.

Fernando Forestieri

Fernando Forestieri3

The little Italian has been instrumental for Sheffield Wednesday since arriving from Watford in the summer.

It would seem now that the fee the Owls paid was a bargain, as he has already bagged 11 goals for the Owls and helped guide them to 5th in the Championship table.

He has a balance and elegance on the ball typical of an Italian number 10, but has the work rate of an old fashioned English centre forward which has drawn fans to love him as one of their own.

Born in Argentina, but an Italian under 21 international, Forestieri possesses all the qualities to be compared to previous Wednesday Italian legends Paolo Di Canio and Benito Carbone.

He may well drive the Owls to promotion himself, but if they miss out, then there will be plenty of clubs willing to take the diminutive forward off their hands.
