Mick McCarthy’s time with Ipswich Town is coming to an end, with the experienced manager entering the final eight fixtures of his time at Portman Road.

An announcement came at the back end of this week that Ipswich and McCarthy would part company at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, with the 59-year-old’s relationship with the Portman Road crowd certainly souring in recent times.

Where McCarthy next moves remains to be seen, but one club that could be on the lookout for a new manager in the summer is Sunderland, who under Chris Coleman are in serious danger of dropping into League One.

Coleman might yet stay at the Stadium of Light to lead Sunderland, however, if the former Welsh manager departs, the Black Cats could do far worse that reuniting with McCarthy.

McCarthy has previously spent time at the Stadium of Light, delivering a promotion from the Championship back in 2005, and although his time with the club ended in disappointment, his return would be greeted with positivity.

Sunderland’s budget in the summer will not be expected to be a big one, which will be a concern as the squad at the Stadium of Light will need seriously overhauling.

McCarthy’s reputation at Ipswich has been built on working with a small budget, which is something that Sunderland will be considering if they find themselves in a position where they have to replace Coleman.

Ipswich have overachieved under McCarthy, and although his time there has ended sourly, his reputation as a Football League boss hasn’t been dented.

There will be plenty of options on the table for McCarthy in the comings months, but the attraction of returning to the Stadium of Light and rebuilding Sunderland could be something that appeals to the 59-year-old.
