Sheffield United will be looking to dust themselves down over the summer before launching another push for promotion in the 2022/23 campaign.

The Blades suffered defeat to Nottingham Forest on penalties in the semi-finals of the play-offs last month after embarking on an impressive run of form under the guidance of Paul Heckingbottom to qualify for this competition.

Heckingbottom has already decided to make some changes to his squad ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

David McGoldrick, Lys Mousset and Luke Freeman will all leave the club when their current deals expire at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, the Blades will also be unable to call upon the services of Charlie Goode, Filip Uremovic and Ben Davies next season as their loan spells have reached a crescendo.

Whereas the Blades will turn to the likes of Chris Basham, John Egan and Jack Robinson for inspiration in the heart of defence next season, it wouldn't be at all surprising if they opt to bolster their options in this particular position over the coming months.

One of the individuals who has recently been linked with a switch to Bramall Lane is Dion Sanderson.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Blades are keen on making a move for the Wolverhampton Wanderers defender.

United could face competition from Sunderland for Sanderson's signature as Alex Neil's side are also being touted as potential suitors.

Instead of being dragged into a bidding war by the Black Cats this summer, the Blades ought to avoid stepping up their pursuit of the defender.

Whereas Sanderson did manage to produce some impressive performances in League One for Sunderland during a temporary spell at the club, he has been less effective in the Championship.

After averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.72 in the third-tier in the 2020/21 campaign, the defender was loaned out to Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers.

Although he did show some signs of promise in the 15 league games that he participated in for the Blues, his performances for the R's earlier this year left a lot to be desired.

Sanderson only managed to record an average WhoScored match rating of 6.36 in this particular stint as QPR experienced an underwhelming end to the term.

When you consider that the 22-year-old is unlikely to be an upgrade on Egan, Robinson and Basham, United shouldn't take a risk on him as there is every chance that he will struggle with his consistency again next season.

Instead of making a move for Sanderson, the Blades should switch their focus to signing a defender who possesses more experience at this level if this is indeed an area that they are looking to address this summer.
