Opinion: Portsmouth need to keep these 3 players in January to win promotion

Portsmouth's inconsistency ultimately cost them last season after erratic performances undermined their strong results.

They had to settle for a play-off spot and were denied by a late winner in the semi-final against Plymouth.

It was a devastating end to such a promising season but Pompey have kept faith with Paul Cook and they have retained the core of their squad.

On top of this they have dipped into the transfer market to add players such as experienced goalkeeper David Forde, exciting winger Milan Lalkovic and versatile journeyman Carl Baker.

But once again Portsmouth fans are not sure whether they are going to see their team dominate their opposition or crumble to an embarrassing defeat because they are capable of both.

They currently sit 5th in the league but should be higher if they were more ruthless, consistent and disciplined.

In order to mount a serious promotion charge, Pompey will need to keep these 3 in-demand players this January otherwise they might see their efforts fall short again.

Conor Chaplin

Star striker Conor Chaplin is being linked with a January move to the Championship but Pompey will be desperate to keep hold of their young talent.

The 19-year-old was mainly limited to substitute cameos last season but he still managed a good goal return and has earned his right to be the regular striker at Fratton Park.

Chaplin has already scored 5 this year and his goals will be key in a promotion-chasing campaign.

Christian Burgess

Christian Burgess has matured into a top class central defender while at Portsmouth.

The 6'5'' centre half is an aerial powerhouse, a threat from set pieces and he can also carry the ball out of defence.

The 25-year-old has been largely responsible for Portsmouth's solid defensive displays and they'll need him to keep performing at a top level for them throughout the season.
