Newcastle United are closing in on completing a deal for Burnley and England goalkeeper Nick Pope.

It emerged via the Telegraph yesterday that the goalkeeper is set to arrive at St. James' Park this summer to compete with current Magpies number one Martin Dubravka.

Pope, who has ambitions to be a part of England's Qatar World Cup squad, is said to be desperate to make the move, meanwhile, Burnley are seemingly keen to continue the mass exodus that is happening at Turf Moor at the moment, as they too want the sale.

In that sense, it is a move that suits all parties, and come the start of the next Premier League campaign, you would not be at all surprised to see Pope starting in-between the sticks for Eddie Howe's side.

One thing that did shock upon viewing, though, was the reported transfer fee that Newcastle United are paying.

As per The Telegraph, the Magpies are set to pay somewhere between £8-10 million for the 30-year-old and even looking at that figure in the most objective terms, it is an absolute steal for a player of Pope's abilities.

You only have to look at some of the astronomical transfer fees paid by Premier League clubs for goalkeepers in recent years to see what a bargain Pope is at this price.

Whilst he is not in the 'elite' category, he is certainly a very good Premier League keeper, and an experienced one at this stage, too, having racked up 141 top-flight matches.

Indeed, whilst he is not in the Ederson or Alisson bracket, he is certainly comparable to the likes of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea's now number two goalkeeper who cost them £72 million in 2018, Jordan Pickford who cost Everton £25 million, and Aaron Ramsdale who set the Gunners back £25 million. Even Angus Gunn when moving from Man City to Southampton in 2018 went for slightly more than the suggested figure that Pope is set to exit Turf Moor for.

All things considered, then, Newcastle United are getting an absolute steal in their deal for Nick Pope.

Burnley clearly must be keen to get him out of the club, otherwise, they would surely be asking for at least another 50% on top of what the Magpies are paying.

It will certainly be interesting to see who Vincent Kompany replaces him with, too.
