With other Championship clubs frantically shuffling their squads in the January transfer window, Newcastle United were wise to stick with their squad.

Rafa Benitez did his business in the summer and is showing faith to this squad as he knows he has enough talent to earn promotion.

The January window is always chaotic and tough to get deals sorted, especially at a reasonable price.

Clubs with no desire to sell their best players will over-inflate their prices so that teams are priced out of snatching these players.

Loan deals always represent the best value for money in January but Newcastle do not need any loan additions; they will do better with players of their own.

Many fans were calling for a winger in January, with Andros Townsend and Mo Barrow touted as possible arrivals.

This was simply not necessary.

The exciting, pacey and tricky Christian Atsu is due back from the African Cup of Nations within the next couple of weeks and he will be like a new signing upon his return.

As well as that, Newcastle have recalled Sammy Ameobi from Bolton and he can do a job if necessary.

Newcastle have such strength in depth that they could probably field two different XIs and be competing for promotion with both.

There was no need to upset the balance of the side in January and Benitez just needs to use the resources that he has to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Newcastle fans - do you agree with this? Did you need to buy in January? Is your current squad good enough to win promotion? Let us know in the comments below...
