Middlesbrough remain in the market to strengthen their squad before the start of the new Championship season and Boro are working hard to get deals over the line.
So far this summer, Middlesbrough have managed to secure the services of the likes of Sammy Ameobi, Matt Crooks, Joe Lumley, Lee Peltier and Uche Ikpeazu.
However, Warnock’s side still requires more work in the transfer market and Boro continue to be linked with moves for a couple of key transfer targets.
It has been confirmed by Neil Warnock when speaking to the Northern Echo that the financial situation regarding Middlesbrough’s move for Martin Payero is proving to be complicated at this stage.
While Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy has also confirmed to Wales Online that Middlesbrough’s opening offer for defender Ciaron Brown was well short of the Bluebirds’ valuation of the left-back. Although he did suggest that they might have to sell him if the right offer is made from Boro during the rest of the transfer window.
It seems that Middlesbrough might be in need of raising a little more funds in the transfer market for them to be able to close one or two deals in the next few weeks.
Whilst Warnock will not want to lose many key players from his squad at this stage, there might be a potential player that Boro could cash in on as interest from the Premier League emerges.
According to the latest report from The Telegraph, all three of West Ham, Everton and Norwich City are interested in making a potential move for defender Djed Spence this summer.
Spence is a player that has demonstrated a lot of potential during his time in Middlesbrough’s first-team over the last few years. However, the defender sometimes lacks consistency and is a player that can frustrate at times considering the amount of ability that everyone knows that he possesses.
It is because of Spence’s vast potential to be developed over the coming years that he is attracting interest from all of West Ham, Everton and Norwich this summer.
However, Middlesbrough might not be able to afford to wait for him to completely fulfil that potential with their focus very much on getting into the Premier League next season.
Therefore, getting a large some of money for Spence at this stage might be a wise decision for Boro because it would enable them to potentially get a couple of their key targets signed and maybe leave room for further additions to be made to the squad.
While a move to the Premier League would offer Spence the chance to play at the highest level and also work day in day out on his game on the training ground with a better quality of players. That might be what is needed to drive him on and get the very best out of him over the coming seasons.
The 20-year-old has already gained a wealth of experience in the Championship, and he would not be someone that is daunted by a move to the top-flight. You could imagine him becoming a key player at a Premier League side in a few years especially if he has had time to develop with a particular top-flight club.
Ideally, Middlesbrough would want to keep hold of him and develop him whilst also securing promotion, but it might serve their short-term goals better for next term if they did cash in on him this summer.
