The fledgling League One table doesn't look too good from the perspective of fans at Kenilworth Road, but the early season form is no indication of where a team might finish come May.

The Hatters were thrashed 3-1 at Peterborough this weekend, adding to their opening day defeat against Portsmouth, with their only point so far has come against Jack Ross' Sunderland side.

On the face of it, Nathan Jones' side have found life tough at the next level, but the fans should take some perspective from the early defeats.

The league table currently has Peterborough and Portsmouth joint top, not just because of their wins over the Hatters, but courtesy of 100% records. They're setting the early pace and there's little doubt that they're going to be major players in this division.

Sunderland are up to fourth, meaning that Luton have in fact faced three of the best four sides at this stage of the season.

They should take heart from the fact they held the Black Cats at Kenilworth Road, something Charlton and Scunthorpe have been unable to do. Both were in the top-six last season, but both found themselves struggling to cope with the squad Ross has put together.

Whilst having one point from nine isn't ideal, they won't be the only sides who lose at London Road or Fratton Park this season. Indeed, it is likely you'll be able to list the teams that lose at one of those grounds on one hand come May. Both are hoping for promotion, both have different approaches, which seem to be paying dividends.

Luton are more akin to the Portsmouth model than the Posh one. Pompey have meticulously built a squad over the course of a season or so, whilst Peterborough have spent big. Luton are also building a squad, moulding much of the League Two promotion side with a couple of new, League One quality faces.

The early indications are it hasn't worked, but two results don't tell a story at all. Luton now face Southend, Shrewsbury, Wycombe and Doncaster in a run of winnable games. Doncaster and Southend might be top 10, but they're not in the same category as Portsmouth or Peterborough. All four of those are matches that the Hatters should pick up points from.

If they're still 22nd after that run of games, then perhaps there's cause for concern, but right now they've endured a tough run of matches and should take credit from their outing against Sunderland, rather than focus on the negatives.

If they keep playing their football and working hard, they'll be much closer to the top-six than the bottom-six at the end of the season.
