Alex Mowatt has previously been a key member of Leeds United's squad.

The 21-year-old has played over 100 times in the league for the Yorkshire based club despite his young age but currently finds himself out of favour under new boss Garry Monk.

It is fair to say his progress has halted somewhat and the Doncaster-born lad needs to leave on loan and spend half a season picking up regular game time elsewhere.

This is not necessarily a reflection of his backward progress but a sign that things are very much on the up at Elland Road.

Garry Monk has come in and revolutionised this Leeds United team with summer arrivals Liam Bridcutt and Eunan O'Kane, as well as young duo Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips all seemingly above Alex Mowatt in the pecking order for the central midfield spots.

Mowatt has previously been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League but has not yet followed the likes of Sam Byram and Lewis Cook, who made the step-up to the top flight at West Ham and Bournemouth respectively.

The former England under-20 international, who is being touted by Gordon Strachan to play for the Scottish national side, is another product of the impressive Leeds United academy system.

He has only managed to feature in eleven of Leeds' Championship fixtures so far this campaign, though, and that has mainly been as a substitute and a bit-part player.

Sitting on the bench might be difficult for the young man, who has grown used to being a regular at Leeds United.

After winning Leeds United Young Player of the Year in 2013/14, Mowatt swept up with Players' Player and the Leeds United Player of the Season award in 2014/15 before another impressive campaign last year.

He is clearly very capable of playing at this level and is still destined for big things.

At this vital stage of his career, though, late cameos are not good enough for his development and if he was to join a lower-end Championship club on loan in January - such as Rotherham United, Barnsley or Wigan (all of whom would snap him up in a heartbeat) - he could get his career back on track and show Garry Monk why he's worthy of more playing time in a Leeds shirt.
