It's been a disappointing season for Brentford so far in comparison to the rollercoaster of a season they had least year.

Is Lee Carsley the perfect fit for Brentford?
Is Lee Carsley the perfect fit for Brentford?

Under the management of Mark Warburton, they unbelievably made the play-offs before losing to Middlesbrough, and were renowned for their free scoring attacking football, impressing and winning over many neutral fans.

Griffin Park was a fortress and they regularly put three or four past teams and gave excellent counter attacking performances away from home which gave them famous results, such as the thumping 4-1 win over rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Their free scoring attitude was typified by the young attacking talents such as starlets Alex Pritchard and Jota, with Andre Gray up front scoring a hatful of goals. Warburton was one of the managers of the season, and Brentford were seen as serious contenders to challenge again.

But then it was announced during the season run-in that Warburton would leave the club due to a disagreement with owner Matthew Benham.

Neutrals were shocked. Many admired the amazing job Warburton had done, and criticised the club for their handling of the whole affair.

During the summer, Pritchard returned to Tottenham Hotspur, Gray left in a big money deal to Burnley and key players like Stuart Dallas and Jonathan Douglas also left. Jota has been struggling with injuries all season.

Risky replacements were made as young German Philip Hoffman, Djuricin and Lasse Vibe were brought in to somehow replace the goals they lost when Gray and Pritchard left.

Marinus Dijkhuizen was brought in to do a frankly impossible job. And, unfortunately, he had some terrible results, such as an embarrassing 4-0 home drubbing by lower league Oxford United, as well as dismal form in the league.

Dijkhuizen was fired a few weeks back, and Lee Carsley was put in permanent charge until the end of the season.

Under him they have picked up three wins on the bounce, and are playing in a more familiar attacking way again with Alan Judge the feature. Carsley and Brentford seem like the perfect fit.

It could be a sign of things to come, and maybe we shouldn't rule Brentford out of the promotion picture just yet.
