Opinion: In-demand 10-goal attacker could be ideal starting point in Ryan Lowe’s Preston evolution as reports emerge

Preston North End are facing a crucial period during the January transfer window where they need to do all that they can to back Ryan Lowe and provide him with the tools he needs to get the Lilywhites moving up the table.

Lowe has made a positive start to life at Deepdale. The former Plymouth Argyle boss has been issued some very exciting messages to the media about what Preston supporters can expect to see from their side in terms of attacking games, and he managed to deliver three points in his first game against Barnsley.

The Lilywhites will be handed more time to work on the training ground over the next few days ahead of their next fixture following the postponement of Lowe’s second game in charge against Millwall. That will provide him with the chance to further assess his options heading into what is a crucial January transfer window where he will get the chance to stamp his mark on the squad.

Upfront is one area that Preston will have to surely be looking as the winter window approaches and Lowe sets about his target of getting more goals into the side. At the moment, the Lilywhites have managed to score just 24 league goals in their opening 22 games and no teams above them in the table have scored fewer than that total.

Football League World believes that Preston have now emerged as one of the teams that are interested in making a move for Motherwell forward Tony Watt in the winter window. That comes with the 27-year-old having been enjoying an excellent campaign in the Scottish Premier League with him firing home nine league goals in 18 appearances and ten across all competitions.

It is believed that Watt’s contract talks with Motherwell over a new deal, with his current one set to expire at the end of the campaign, are not progressing and that means that the door could be open for sides such as Preston to make a move in January. Football League World believes what is on offer from his current club in terms of wages is well below what he could get in the EFL.

Preston are believed to be facing competition from the likes of Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City for Watt’s services. However, the fact that they have a manager in Lowe who has proven his ability to get the best out of his attacking options could mean they are in with a great shout of securing his signature.

Watt has of course played in the Championship before with him scoring seven goals across 36 appearances in the English second during his spell with Charlton Athletic in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns. That shows that he can cut it at this level and he is now an even more experienced and rounded player since his days at The Valley.

It could be a brilliant time for anyone to snap up Watt who is now entering the prime years of his career, and having had a rejuvenation of his career with Motherwell this season he would be full of confidence and ready to keep on progressing.

Lowe might be able to get hold of Watt and bring the best out of him and if he could do that then he would certainly be an asset for the Lilywhites. His record is mixed throughout his career at various clubs so it would be a gamble, but if Preston can sign him on the cheap then it could be an ideal starting point to their January recruitment.
