West Brom moved quickly to secure the services of Carlos Corberan for the long-term this week.

The Spaniard had been linked with the vacancy at Leeds United following the dismissal of Jesse Marsch on Monday.

It was a decisive action that deserves credit, as Corberan has been a revelation at the Hawthorns.

A record of 10 wins from 13 league games has seen the Baggies climb the Championship table and into promotion contention.

This form highlights the talent that Corberan possesses, with his style of play proving a perfect fit for the squad that Steve Bruce could barely get a tune out of earlier this campaign.

The stark contrast in form at Albion between the two managers has only raised the stock of the former Leeds assistant coach after following his disappointing spell with Greek giants Olympiacos last year.

But the contrast will sting even further at the John Smith Stadium, where Huddersfield Town are currently competing against relegation.

Just 12 months ago the Terriers were in a position much closer to West Brom’s, with a top two finish very much on the cards.

Ultimately it would be Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest who joined Fulham in the Premier League for this season, but a run to the play-off final was a huge achievement for Huddersfield given they had finished 20th the season prior.

But a hugely disappointing summer saw Corberan walk away from the club just weeks after the defeat at Wembley stadium.

Key players from that promotion contending team such as Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo also departed and it has been all downhill since.

Mark Fotheringham finds himself in an impossible position, having taken the reins from Danny Schofield in the early stages of the campaign.

He inherited a side that is rooted in the relegation zone, with a fanbase who were disappointed to see the previous manager walk away and a club that lost two of its best players to the Premier League in the transfer window.

The club serves as a lesson to the Baggies of just how important it was for them to hold onto Corberan amid this potential interest from Leeds.

But, similarly, West Brom’s current form only emphasises the 12 months that Huddersfield have been through as they now look to be following in the footsteps of Barnsley instead of the likes of Fulham.

The decisive action at the Hawthorns only serves to highlight the potential that was squandered by those in charge at the John Smith Stadium.
